Math Pentathlon

Welcome to another fun and exciting year of Math Pentathlon at Spicewood Elementary!

Mathematics Pentathlon ( is a program of interactive problem-solving games that help develop and practice math concepts and skills. This motivational and fun program promotes creative thinking by linking arithmetic reasoning with geometric/spatial and logical/scientific thinking. In addition to helping students develop active problem-solving skills, the Math Pentathlon program encourages friendly competition and reinforces good sportsmanship.
There are three divisions based on grade level with five age-appropriate games in each division. Links to brief descriptions of each of the five games in each division are provided below.
At the end of the season, students will have the opportunity to compete in a one-day Division level tournament, where each student plays all 5 games against competitors from other schools in the region.
The Spicewood Math Pentathlon program will be offered as an after-school club managed and staffed by parent volunteers. We would like all parents to volunteer at least once a month so that we can ensure the best learning experience. Students will have the opportunity to receive game instruction from trained volunteer coaches and practice the games with fellow Pentathletes.

Students meet on Thursdays after-school from 2:55pm - 4pm at Spicewood Elementary beginning on 10/4/18.

Club meetings in February, March and April will only be for students registered for the tournaments.

We typically offer one group in Division I, one group in Division II and one group in Division III.  Each group consists of a maximum of 20 students and will be managed by 5 parent volunteers (2 coaches and 3 volunteers).  The number of students we can accept is dependent on the number of parent volunteers we have.

Admission to the club will be on first-come, first-served basis. The children of full-time trained coaches are guaranteed automatic placement in the club.

The Math Pentathlon club relies heavily on the participation of parent volunteers to run smoothly. Each class needs 5 parent volunteers - 2 coaches and 3 volunteers - to ensure that the kids have a great learning experience.

Click here for more information on Coach/Volunteer responsibilities.
IMPORTANT: All volunteers must (re)register with RRISD every school year. Click here to apply for RRISD's background check.
Volunteers will not be allowed to help unless the background check is complete.

We expect all parents to volunteer at least once a month.  Use this link to sign up now!

As a recognition of the effort and time commitment put in by our coaches, children of these parents are guaranteed automatic placement in the club.

The student registration start for the 2018-2019 school year is now closed.  We may have some openings in Division 3, please contact Kara at email below if you have an interested 4th or 5th grader.
Spicewood PTA sponsors this club and your membership dues pay for your registration and t-shirt. At least one person in your family must be a member of the Spicewood PTA to register for this club.
Students of trained coaches are guaranteed placement in the club. The remaining slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis in the order in which completed registrations are received.
