Welcome to another fun and exciting year of Math Pentathlon at Spicewood Elementary!
Mathematics Pentathlon (www.mathpentath.org) is a program of interactive problem-solving games that help develop and practice math concepts and skills. This motivational and fun program promotes creative thinking by linking arithmetic reasoning with geometric/spatial and logical/scientific thinking. In addition to helping students develop active problem-solving skills, the Math Pentathlon program encourages friendly competition and reinforces good sportsmanship.
There are three divisions based on grade level with five age-appropriate games in each division. Links to brief descriptions of each of the five games in each division are provided below.
At the end of the season, students compete in a one-day Division level tournament, where each student plays all 5 games against competitors from other schools in the region.
SPICEWOOD CLUB INFORMATION
The Spicewood Math Pentathlon program is offered as an school club led by parent volunteers. We need additional parent leaders and helpers to continue this program.
Our meeting times will be Thursdays from 3-4 pm or 6-7 pm at Spicewood from October 24th through the tournament date. Your club meeting time will not change after selected, you attend one or the other time slot.
To provide the best quality experience possible for our students, we typically limit the enrollment for Math Pentathlon to 20 students for each division. The number of students we can accept is dependent on the number of parent coaches/volunteers we have. Priority enrollment will be given to students whose parents are trained and committed to coaching weekly sessions.
All parents are required to volunteer at least once a month so that we can ensure the best learning experience. Failure to meet this obligation will restrict your future registration for the club.
The Math Pentathlon club relies heavily on the participation of parent volunteers to run smoothly. We are currently recruiting coaches for all divisions. Please contact the math pentathlon chair if you are interested! We pay for training for our coaches and we want to get you signed up!
Click here for more information on Coach/Volunteer responsibilities.
IMPORTANT: All volunteers must (re)register with RRISD every school year. Click here to apply for RRISD's background check.
Volunteers will not be allowed to help unless the background check is complete.
As recognition of the effort and time commitment by our coaches, children of these parents are guaranteed automatic placement in the club.
The student registration for the 2019-2020 school year will open September 11th at noon. Admission to the club will be on first-come, first-served basis. The children of full-time trained coaches are guaranteed automatic placement in the club.
Spicewood PTA sponsors this club and your membership dues pay for club supplies and t-shirt for your child. At least one person in your family must be a member of the Spicewood PTA to register for this club.
Because of our limited enrollment, it is ESSENTIAL that we have a committed attitude from your child for participation in the program and from parents who are available and interested in learning the games and assisting the students during each weekly session.
Please understand that this academic club is an enrichment activity where students are expected to be cooperative and respectful.
We expect all students to represent Spicewood in the spring tournament.
